The insurance industry’s definition of flood, and the related events that are typically excluded from homeowners’ policies, are much broader than you may realize. Unfortunately, this is often something that is not learned until a claim is denied.
Before you can obtain excess flood insurance, you need primary flood coverage. In most states, this baseline protection can be added to an AIG Private Client Group's homeowners' policy. If that’s not feasible where you reside, similar protection is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program.
Obtaining primary flood insurance is the first step toward proper protection, but its coverage limits ($250,000 for the home structure; $100,000 for contents inside it) may leave you with substantial out-of-pocket expenses in the event of major damage. An excess flood policy will extend your coverage seamlessly.
